South London Geek Night 2

8:30pm, 14 July 2010

The Bedford, Balham

South London Geek Nights offer a chance for web developers, designers, technologists and the like in the local area to get together, share their knowledge and talk about new ideas, issues, techniques and more.

Each event consists of two keynote talks of 15 minutes each. You can also expect frenetic bursts of socialising and networking, interspersed with two bunches of 5-minute-long microslots. And beer. It's in a pub, after all.

Keynotes

Keynote speakers are invited to talk at South London Geek Night. SLGN2 will feature:

NoSQL: what does it mean, how did we get here, and why should I care? by Hugo Rodger-Brown [ Slides

Hugo is a web technology specialist with particular experience in ecommerce. Having recently left Tesco, where he led the development of the Tesco Entertainment website, Hugo is currently working as a technical director for a web agency in Camden. He blogs at http://hugorodgerbrown.blogspot.com

Pretty Numbers by Simon Plenderleith and Alistair Holt [Slides (Keynote, Quicktime movie) ]

Simon and Alistair run Makitó Labs - a web consultancy that creates unique, useful and downright juicy websites and apps. They've both been poking around with the web since the late 90s and recently created the popular website Vote for Policies which helped people to decide who they should vote for in the general election based on policies, not personalities. They'll be talking about the data they collected from site, sharing some juicy data porn and telling us how they managed to keep it all working with huge numbers of visitors.

Microslots

These are five-minute "lightning" talks that anyone can volunteer for. They're easy to do: pick something that excites you, or a project you've worked on that you think might be of interest; then talk to a friendly audience for just five minutes with a handful of slides. Submit your microslot and we'll see you on the night!

Confirmed microslots for SLGN2 are:

Being user-centred: How to design your website (or anything else) better by Colm Brophy - "A short introduction to user-centred design, the techniques and tools that are used and how it can make just about anything you design better."

Dynamic Pub Table Configuration Protocol by Mike Hemstock - A humourous look at how pub food can find its way from kitchen to table using different types of computer technology.  Winner of the 2007 LUG Radio Live Lightning Talks.

Building Security In...to Geeks  by Gabe Chomic - Chances are, you or someone you know has been a local business's 'tech guy'. But what about their security guy? Where does a SME find security? They don't, not now. This talk covers a few brief thoughts on the subject, and some work we're doing in the area

The Bedford - Tavistock Room (the one right at the top of the stairs. There's a bar up there, but the room's only open from 8.15 - so feel free to lounge around in the main bar first if you arrive early, then wobble your drink up the stairs at quarter past)
